Open Box Return Policy: Which Stores Actually Let You Send It Back
Has been buying open-box and returned stock for over a decade, and built Warehouse Watcher to stop losing track of it.
An open box return policy is the safety net under every warehouse deal. The discount tells you what you save if everything goes right; the return policy tells you what happens if it does not. This guide compares open box return policies at Amazon Warehouse (now Amazon Resale), Best Buy, Costco, Newegg and eBay, plus the statutory rights that protect online open-box buyers in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
The rule I use: never buy open-box from a seller whose return policy you could not explain in one sentence. A 20% discount with a 30-day return beats a 40% discount marked final sale, every single time, because the thing that kills open-box deals is never the price. It is discovering the defect on day 31.
Amazon open box return policy: 30 days, no replacements
Amazon renamed its open-box program Amazon Resale in 2025, but the safety net did not change. Amazon's own customer service policy states that items shipped from Amazon, including Amazon Warehouse, can be returned within 30 days of delivery. That covers Used-Like New through Used-Acceptable grades, and it works the same on amazon.com and amazon.ca.
Three catches worth knowing. First, each Resale item is unique, so you can never get a replacement or an exchange, only a refund. If you return the one you bought, that condition grade in that model is simply gone. Second, listings marked Final Sale are genuinely final: no returns, no refunds, and it is noted clearly on the product page before you buy. Third, Amazon Renewed, the refurbished program, is more generous, with a 90-day return window backed by the Renewed Guarantee, and Renewed Premium items stretch to a full year.
One UK-specific wrinkle: change-of-mind returns to Amazon may not include free return postage, so check the return method and any postage charge before you send it back. And read Amazon Warehouse condition grades first so you know what the grade you are buying actually promises on arrival.
Best Buy open box return policy: 15 days, 60 for members
Here is the misconception this guide exists to kill: Best Buy applies its return windows to new, clearance, open-box, refurbished and pre-owned items equally. Buying open-box at Best Buy does not put you on a worse policy. The standard window is 15 days from the day you receive the product, not the day you ordered it, and My Best Buy Plus and Total members get 60 days on most products.
Two categories get shorter windows. Activatable devices, phones, cellular tablets, hotspots and wearables, get 14 days for everyone regardless of membership, with Verizon devices getting 30. Best Buy generally does not charge restocking fees on returned open-box items, but it can refuse a return if the item picked up damage beyond what was disclosed, is missing accessories, or arrives without proof of purchase. Inspect on arrival and keep everything.
Best Buy's open-box program is also where condition grades matter most at the return desk. An item sold as Excellent-Certified carries the full manufacturer warranty, while lower grades lean harder on the return window as the safety net. Run the open-box inspection checklist in the first week either way.
Costco open box returns: 90 days on electronics, no clock on the rest
Costco's return policy is the gold standard for open-box and refurbished tech. Most merchandise carries the famous satisfaction guarantee with no time limit at all, and the membership card doubles as your receipt: every purchase is tied to the account, so the return desk can look up anything. Opened boxes and missing packaging are usually fine, though returning electronics with all the cables and remotes makes the process visibly faster.
The exception is electronics and major appliances, which must come back within 90 days of receipt. That 90-day clock covers refurbished laptops, TVs, drones and computers bought at Costco, and it starts when the item arrives, not when you first turn it on. Keep the original packaging for anything expensive until you are sure it is staying, because a complete return sails through while a partial one can stall at the desk.
One more detail that matters for open-box buyers: Costco does exchanges on electronics by processing a return and a new purchase, which starts a fresh 90-day clock on the replacement. Costco's online listings for refurbished and open-box tech are tracked alongside its regular deals in the Canada deals and US deals feeds.
Newegg, eBay and Europe: the open box return policy elsewhere
Newegg sells a lot of refurbished gear, and its terms are fair but narrower. Items covered by Newegg's 30-day return policy can be returned for refund or replacement within 30 days, but a 15% restocking fee may apply on change-of-mind returns, so buying refurbished to 'try it out' has a real cost at Newegg. Marketplace sellers on Newegg must meet or exceed a 30-day return period, but they can also charge up to 15% for buyer-remorse reasons. For defective items, no restocking fee is allowed.
eBay is entirely seller-dependent for change-of-mind returns, so read the listing's returns tab before you bid. The floor underneath everything is eBay's Money Back Guarantee: items that are not as described, damaged or missing parts are covered for 30 days regardless of what the seller's personal policy says.
In the UK, the Consumer Contracts Regulations give you a 14-day change-of-mind cooling-off period on distance purchases, and it applies to open-box items sold by businesses, not just new ones. In Germany, France, Italy and Spain, the same 14-day right exists as the statutory right of withdrawal (Widerrufsrecht in Germany), so open-box orders from Currys, MediaMarkt, FNAC and similar retailers all carry that baseline. WarehouseWatcher tracks UK open-box stock alongside sales and lightning deals in the UK deals feed.
The 7-day open box audit: make the return policy work for you
A return window only protects you if you use it. Run this audit in the first seven days, while every policy on this page is still comfortably open.
First, unbox and test everything immediately, not 'this weekend.' Plug it in, run every function, and check every accessory against the box contents. Second, keep the original packaging and all paperwork for at least the length of the return window; a complete return is processed in minutes, an incomplete one can be docked or refused. Third, register the product with the manufacturer using the serial number right away, because some warranties start from the first retail sale, and if the brand shows an expired or unregisterable warranty, the return window is your only escape hatch. Finally, screenshot the listing page with its condition grade at checkout. It is your evidence of what was promised if the item arrives looking worse than described.
And the deal math, one last time: a strong return policy is part of the price. If Costco gives you 90 days and a no-name marketplace seller gives you final sale, the open-box TV that costs $50 more at Costco can be the cheaper deal once risk is priced in.
Frequently asked questions
Do open box items have the same return policy as new?
At the big retailers, yes. Amazon applies its standard 30-day return policy to Amazon Resale (formerly Amazon Warehouse) items, and Best Buy's return windows explicitly cover new, clearance, open-box, refurbished and pre-owned purchases alike. Costco goes further, with no time limit on most merchandise and 90 days on electronics. The exceptions are marked final-sale listings, third-party marketplace sellers who set their own terms, and stores like Newegg that may charge a restocking fee for change-of-mind returns.
Which store has the best return policy for open-box items?
For electronics, Costco is the clearest winner: 90 days, no receipt needed, and opened or used items are fine as long as you are genuinely dissatisfied. Best Buy members on Plus or Total plans get 60 days on most products, open-box included. For everyone else, Amazon's 30 days on Resale items is the most generous baseline return policy you will find on open-box stock.
Can you return an open box item if you just changed your mind?
Yes, within the return window, and for most major stores a change of mind is a fully valid reason. Amazon gives you 30 days, Best Buy 15 days (60 for Plus and Total members), and Costco 90 days on electronics. Keep the item in the condition you received it, with all accessories, and you get a full refund. The main catch: Newegg can apply a 15% restocking fee to change-of-mind returns on refurbished items, and eBay sellers set their own change-of-mind terms.
What if the open box item arrives damaged or is missing parts?
Report it as a defect, not a change of mind, and do it as soon as you find the problem. A defect gets you a full refund at every major retailer, and on eBay it triggers the Money Back Guarantee for items not as described. At Amazon, remember that Resale items cannot be replaced or exchanged, each one is unique, so the outcome is a refund, not a swap. Beyond the retailer's window, your statutory rights for faulty goods still apply in the UK and EU regardless of the lower open-box price.
Can you return an open box item after the return window closes?
From the retailer, usually no. Once the window closes, the store owes you nothing beyond your statutory rights for faulty goods. Your fallback is whatever manufacturer warranty survives the resale, which varies by brand and often starts from the original retail sale date. This is why the first move after any open-box purchase should be checking and registering the warranty while the return window is still open.
