Dyson V15 vs Shark Stratos: Which Cordless Vacuum Actually Wins?

The Dyson V15 vs Shark Stratos fight is closer than the price tags suggest. The Dyson V15 Detect is the tech showcase: a green laser that exposes dust on hard floors, a sensor that counts particles on an LCD screen, and up to 240 air watts of suction in Boost mode. The Shark Stratos is the pragmatist: a self-cleaning brushroll, dirt-sensing auto suction and an odour neutraliser, at a US list price of $499.99 against the Dyson's $849.99. Both promise 60 minutes of runtime. Only one deserves your money, and which one depends on your floors, your pets and your patience for maintenance.

The spec sheet, side by side

Runtime is a dead heat on the box and in reality: both claim up to 60 minutes in Eco mode with a non-motorised tool, and both deliver substantially less with a powered floorhead attached. The differences that matter live elsewhere.

  • Suction: Dyson up to 240 AW in Boost (V15 Detect Plus); Shark does not headline an air-watt figure and leans on its DuoClean PowerFins floorhead instead
  • Weight: Dyson 6.8 lb (3.1 kg); Shark 8.9 lb (4.0 kg) — you feel this difference above shoulder height
  • Dust bin: Dyson 0.77 litres; Shark 0.72 quarts (about 0.68 litres). Both are small; both need emptying mid-clean in shedding season
  • Hair management: Dyson anti-tangle comb and conical hair screw tool; Shark Anti-Hair Wrap Plus, which actively combs hair off the brushroll as you clean
  • Filtration: both whole-machine HEPA; the Shark adds Anti-Allergen Complete Seal and an odour neutraliser cartridge
  • Batteries: both removable. Dyson charges in about 4.5 hours, the Shark in about 3.5 hours
  • Warranty: Dyson 2 years; Shark 5-year limited warranty in the US, and a 5-year guarantee on registration in the UK

The Shark also bends. Its MultiFlex wand folds to reach under sofas without you crouching, and folds flat for storage. The Dyson cannot do either trick, but its click-in battery system and lighter body make it the easier machine to live with day to day.

Dyson V15 vs Shark Stratos on hard floors: the laser settles it

The Dyson's party trick is real. The Fluffy Optic head angles a green laser along the floor and dust that was invisible suddenly is not, while the piezo sensor counts and sizes particles and shows the tally on the LCD. Auto mode raises suction when the particle count spikes. On hard floors, which is where cordless sticks earn their keep, the V15 is the most convincing cleaner here, and it is the one reviewers keep using as the benchmark.

The Shark answers with Clean Sense IQ, an infrared sensor that detects hidden dirt and boosts power automatically, plus a DuoClean floorhead running two brushrolls at once: a soft roller for hard floors and fins for carpet. In independent lab testing the Stratos posted a perfect carpet deep-clean score, which is not something cheaper Sharks manage. What the Shark will not do is show its work. There is a battery readout, but no particle count and no laser, so you clean on faith.

Verdict: if your home is mostly hard flooring and you want proof the floor is actually clean, the Dyson wins this round outright. Mixed floors with heavy carpet lean Shark, where the dual brushroll earns its keep.

For pet owners, the Shark Stratos wins

Pet owners: buy the Shark. Anti-Hair Wrap Plus is the feature that changes your week, because the brushroll clears itself instead of winding hair into a mat you have to cut out with scissors. Pet versions of the Stratos add a motorised pet tool and the odour neutraliser cartridge, which genuinely takes the edge off the dog smell that lives in every vacuum bin. Shark built the Stratos line around pet homes and it shows.

The Dyson is not bad with pets. The hair screw tool, a small conical brush that spirals hair off itself and into the bin, is superb on stairs, car seats and pet beds, and the Digital Motorbar head has an anti-tangle comb. But the main floorhead still collects wrap over time, and at $849.99 list you are paying a premium for a machine that asks more of you. For a house with two shedding dogs, the Stratos is the honest recommendation.

For large homes, the lighter Dyson wins

Large homes flip the verdict. The Shark's 8.9 lb gets heavy by the third room, and its smaller-feeling real-world runtime means the 60-minute claim evaporates fast with the powered head on carpet. The Dyson, at 6.8 lb, is noticeably less tiring across a full house, its battery clicks out in a second, and a spare pack turns it into a genuinely whole-house machine. The LCD's live runtime countdown, shown to the second, also stops the battery dying on you mid-staircase.

Neither bin is big enough for a large home with pets, so both will have you at the trash can mid-clean. Accept it, or step up a class. For everyone in a flat or a small house, ignore this section: either vacuum covers your square footage on one charge.

Price and value: the budget verdict

Budget buyers: buy the Shark, and it is not close. At US list prices it is $499.99 against $849.99, it carries the longer warranty, and its running costs are lower, with washable filters and cheaper replacement parts. The Dyson is the better machine in several specific ways, but it is not $350 better for most people.

Frequently asked questions

Which has stronger suction, the Dyson V15 or the Shark Stratos?

The Dyson, on paper and in testing. Its Boost mode reaches 240 air watts on the current V15 Detect Plus, and independent reviewers consistently measure stronger sealed suction than the Shark. The Stratos counters with a dual-brushroll floorhead that scrubs debris loose, so the real-world gap is smaller than the spec gap.

Which is better for pet hair, Dyson V15 or Shark Stratos?

The Shark Stratos, for most homes. Anti-Hair Wrap Plus strips hair off the brushroll as you clean and pet models add an odour neutraliser, so the vac stays fresher between cleans. The Dyson's hair screw tool is excellent on stairs and upholstery, but its main carpet head needs more manual detangling on long hair.

Do the Dyson V15 and Shark Stratos really run for 60 minutes?

Not with a motorised head attached. The 60-minute figure for both is measured in Eco mode with a non-motorised tool. With the main floorhead doing real work, plan on roughly 25 to 40 minutes depending on mode, which is why swappable batteries matter for bigger homes.

Should I wait for a sale to buy either vacuum?

Buy whichever matches your home, but rarely at list. Both models are discounted heavily and repeatedly in the US, and open-box units surface on Amazon Warehouse. Track the [US deals](https://warehousewatcher.com/us) feed and the Warehouse listings before paying full price for either.
