How Target discounts stack
Target is one of the better stacking retailers, and the order matters. A Target Circle offer, a manufacturer coupon, and a Target store coupon can generally combine on the same item, and the RedCard discount then applies to the reduced total. Circle Week promotions and gift-card-with-purchase offers layer on top of that again, which is how the genuinely large Target savings get assembled. Anything typed at checkout as a code is usually the least valuable layer in that stack. The gift-card offers are worth counting as a discount only if you shop there regularly enough to spend the card.
What Target codes don't cover
Circle offers and codes exclude gift cards, prescriptions, and clearance in most cases, and typically exclude Apple products and gaming hardware. Many offers are one per guest per day and reset rather than accumulate, so a large basket may need splitting across days to use them all. Grocery and household codes carry minimum spends that exclude the alcohol and tobacco portion of the basket from counting toward the threshold. Same-day delivery fees sit outside the discount.
When Target actually discounts
Target runs Circle Week events in the spring and summer, a deals event opposite Prime Day, and a long Black Friday period beginning in early November. Its clearance cycle is unusually predictable — markdowns step down on set weekdays by department, so a given category reduces on the same day each week and the deepest cuts land at a knowable point. That schedule is what makes end-of-season Target clearance worth planning around rather than stumbling into, particularly on seasonal decor and apparel.
Sitewide or per-listing?
Target has largely replaced promotional codes with account-linked Circle offers, which is why there are fewer typed codes to find here than at a comparable retailer. The offers are real discounts; they just have to be activated in the account before checkout rather than pasted at it, and an unactivated offer will not apply retroactively. Is a code the best discount at Target?
Target is one of the few retailers where working the promotional system genuinely pays, because the layers actually combine. A Circle offer plus a manufacturer coupon plus RedCard on a clearance-adjacent item produces discounts that no single code matches. The effort is real, though — it takes activating offers before you shop rather than after. If you are not going to do that, the weekly clearance schedule alone will get you most of the available saving for none of the work.
